As a society, we’ll get a whole new context for the phrase, “live and learn.” Please know we are on this uncharted journey together! You have lots of options when it comes to Health and Physical Education while home. First, please remind yourself that what you do for P.E. doesn’t have to look like what schools do for P.E.. You can get your kids moving, learning about fitness, improving their coordination, building strength, and enjoying their physical selves in a variety of ways. I will post ideas and links throughout our closure to help you. I was currently teaching Health to grades K-8, and was able to send home a copy or two about the topics we were working on, 'hand-washing, nutrition, and energy balance'. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]. Please see the tabs below with your grade for more information. This will be a cumulative post.
Here are some fun 'at home' activities: Children should get at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Remember to always stretch before any activity.
HOT LAVA I used to play this all the time as a child! Make a simple version by cutting out squares of non-skid shelf matting. spread the matting around on the floor, and the players have to hop from “stone” to “stone” without falling into the hot lava.
DANCE PARTY My favorite! Put on some music and bust out your best dance moves. You can organize some dances too, like a conga line, the chicken dance, and the limbo!
“SNOWBALL” FIGHT Ball up some white socks and throw them at one another! Don’t get hit or you turn into a snow statue!
BALANCE BEAM This is an easy one to set up. Stick a long piece of painters tape to the floor and encourage your children to walk across the beam without falling off. You can make it more challenging by having them hop from one balance beam to another.
Grades PK-2 will meet on Mondays at 11:00 am Grades 3,4,5 will meet on Thursdays at 11:30 am Grades 6,7,8 will meet on Thursdays at 11:00 am Another great website for kids is https://gonoodle.com . These are short brain breaks that the kids love! More Fun ideas for at home PE: HOPSCOTCH While you have the painter’s tape out, why not set up a game of hopscotch? Use a bean bag to toss onto the squares of the hopscotch area. If you don’t want to waste painter’s tape, you could always purchase a hopscotch rug and roll it out when you want to play.
STRETCHING Stretching is one of my favorite indoor physical education activities. Roll out the yoga mats and strike a pose! There are many great kids’ YouTube videos available.
HULA HOOPS Have you ever done 1 minute of hula hooping?! It’s quite the workout! Get out some small hula hoops and challenge your children to keep their hula hoop up as long as they can.
BEAN BAG TOSS Set up a target and have your children toss bean bags into it. You can have bowls (each worth a different point value), or use a box with cuts holes in it. You could use socks rolled up, or small stuffed animals instead of bean bags!
